Toddler Bedtime Routine 5 Tips from a Dubai Sleep Coach | Expert Sleep Advice

Bedtime can be challenging for many parents of toddlers. As a Dubai sleep consultant, I regularly work with families struggling with bedtime battles, late sleep times, and overtired toddlers. The good news is that a consistent bedtime routine can dramatically improve sleep for young children.

Here are proven bedtime strategies that help toddlers fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer.

Leading Dubai Sleep Consultant, Claudine Gillard, shares advice on bedtime routines that can help transform toddlers’ sleep.

Toddler Bedtime Routines That Actually Improve Sleep

1. Establish a Predictable 20–30 Minute Bedtime Routine

A bedtime routine should be calm, repetitive and done in the same order every night.

Focus on a bathtime to help little ones wind down. Encourage your toddler to fetch their pyjamas, and maybe their favourite bedtime cuddly toy, so they are proactively helping prepare for bedtime, and getting into a habit of getting ready for bed themselves.

Set the scene with low lighting for a relaxing bedtime story, ideally in their bedroom if possible. Encourage them to get tucked up in bed and enjoy a quiet cuddle, before saying a good night sign off, such as “Night, night, sleep tight”. Use this same sign-off phrase each night.

It is then time to leave the room confidently and quietly. Routine repetition will cue the brain that sleep is coming, and that reduces resistance over time.

2. Create Calm Time 60 Minutes Before Bed

Create a “wind-down window” before bedtime by:

  • Turning off screens

  • Using lamps instead of ceiling lights

  • Choosing quiet and calming activities

  • Avoiding active play

This allows melatonin (the chemical released that tells your brain it’s time to sleep) to increase naturally, and start getting into a more sleepy state.

3. Set a Consistent Bedtime

Toddlers benefit from going to bed at roughly the same time every night, even on weekends.

Most toddlers do best with bedtimes between 6:30 & 7:30 pm, depending on age and naps.

Consistency helps regulate the internal body clock and reduces bedtime struggles significantly.

4. How Parents Should Respond to Bedtime Resistance

When toddlers sense hesitation, frustration, or emotional intensity, bedtime resistance often increases.

Instead, try to:

  • Keep language minimal

  • Avoid negotiating or lengthy explanations

  • Stay calm, predictable, and confident

As Claudine explains: “Calm, boring responses reduce bedtime battles far faster than lengthy explanations or emotional reactions. If toddlers get a reaction, they will play up even more.”

5. The Ideal Sleep Environment for Toddlers

Creating a sleep-friendly bedroom environment is essential for quality sleep.

Darkness

Keep the room dark at night. Consider blackout curtains or blinds, especially during summer months. If your child fears the dark, use a dim red or amber nightlight.

Temperature

Maintain the bedroom between 16–22°C (60–72°F).

Sound

Low-volume white noise (below 50 decibels) can mask household sounds and act as a consistent sleep cue.

When Bedtime Battles Mean a Bigger Sleep Issue

If bedtime resistance is paired with:

  • Frequent night wakings

  • Early morning wakeups

  • Short or skipped naps

  • Climbing out of the crib or leaving the room

…it may indicate a sleep schedule or sleep foundation issue, rather than just a bedtime routine problem.
